چکیده

We report x-ray reflectivity measurements of liquid mercury between 236 °C and 125 °C. The surface structure can be described by a layered density profile convolved with a thermal roughness sT . The layering has a spacing of 2.72 Å and an exponential decay length of 5.0 Å. Surprisingly, sT is found to increase considerably faster with temperature than the AT behavior predicted by capillary wave theory, in contrast with previous measurements on Ga and dielectric liquids. @S0163-1829~98!52144-3#

Competition between Surface Layering and Surface Phase Formation in Dilute Liquid HgAu Alloys

We present temperature-dependent X-ray reflectivity measurements of liquid Hg alloyed with 0.06-0.20 atom % Au. At low Au concentrations, we find temperature-dependent surface-induced layering similar to that observed in pure Hg, except that the presence of Au reduces the layering amplitude. Upon approaching the solubility limit of Au in Hg, a new surface phase forms which is 1-2 atomic diamete...

Surface layering in liquid gallium: An X-ray reflectivity study.

Surface-induced atomic layering in liquid gallium has been observed using x-ray reflectivity, ultrahigh vacuum conditions, and sputtered clean surfaces. Reflectivity data, collected on a supercooled liquid sample to momentum transfers as large as qz 3.0 Å21, exhibit a strong maximum near 2.4 Å21 indicating a layer spacing that is comparable to its atomic dimensions. The amplitude of the elect...

X-ray reflectivity measurements of surface layering in liquid mercury.

The surface normal structure of the mercury liquid-vapor interface has been investigated by measuring the x-ray reflectivity out to a momentum transfer of qz 2.5 Å . The results provide direct experimental proof of surface layering in liquid metals. The layer spacing is given by the atomic dimensions of the Hg atoms. The minimum layer width agrees well with the predictions of capillary wave t...

X-ray studies of atomic layering at liquid metal surfaces

Surface-induced layering has been observed in liquid gallium and mercury using X-ray reflectivity. The specular reflectivity R(q,) has been measured to wavevector transfers as large as q, = 3.0 A-‘. For Ga, the only major deviations from pesnel theory R, are near q, = 2.4 A-‘, where there is a peak in the ratio R/R,. For Hg, there is a broad peak near 2.15 A-‘. The data have been collected on a...

X-ray reflectivity studies of liquid metal and alloy surfaces

Surface-induced atomic layering at the liquid/vapor interface in liquid metals has been observed using x-ray reflectivity on sputtered clean surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. A well-defined quasi-Bragg peak is obtained for surfaces of elemental Ga and a Ga-In alloy at large wave vectors qz;2.3–2.5 Å . These results are an unambiguous indication of atomic layering with an interlayer sp...
